Areas
Areas covered by Wisbech and Fenland roofers
Roofing here is not one market. Wisbech and Fenland roofers price the Georgian riverside, the town wards and the open fen villages as three different jobs at three different prices.
Wisbech sits on the tidal River Nene, which runs through the middle of the town and is crossed by two road bridges. The population was 33,933 at the 2021 census, and the town is noteworthy for its fine examples of Georgian architecture, most obviously along North Brink and South Brink where the best of it faces the water.
Peckover House on North Brink is the clearest illustration. Built in 1722 and originally known as Bank House, it was bought by the Quaker Peckover banking family in the 1790s, and it is now owned by the National Trust with its walled garden behind it. Buildings of that period and that status set the tone for the whole riverside, and they are the reason so much of the centre is protected.
Altogether the town contains over 250 listed buildings and monuments. They gather along the river and around the Old Market, the Market Place and The Crescent. Move outwards and the picture changes quickly: ordinary housing where the material choice is usually yours to make, and then open fen villages where nothing shelters a roof from anything.

The Wisbech town wards
Wisbech Town Council covers the wards of Claremont, Clarence, Clarkson, Medworth, Octavia Hill, Peckover East, Peckover West, Walsoken, Waterlees and Wisbech North. Several of those names turn up again as villages just outside the town, which is worth remembering when you are describing where you live to a roofer over the phone.
If you are in a conservation area
Fenland District Council has 10 conservation areas. In one of them the council takes extra control over demolition, trees, development generally and minor alterations, and it gives cladding a building, inserting dormers and attaching satellite dishes as its own examples of the last of those.
The council does not publish a list of acceptable roof coverings, so the only reliable answer for your address comes from the council itself. Ask before you order. There is more in the listed buildings and conservation areas guide.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Elm, Emneth, Leverington, Wisbech St Mary, Upwell, Outwell, Tydd St Giles, Newton, Parson Drove, Friday Bridge, Coldham, Guyhirn, Murrow, Terrington St John, Marshland St James, Sutton Bridge and Long Sutton are all covered.
For anything in the historic centre of Wisbech we match to firms that take on heritage and conservation area work, because a general roofer is not the right answer on a listed frontage.
Quite a lot, although mileage is the least of it. Materials, consent and access do most of the work.
Listed status can dictate a covering that costs several times what concrete tile does, and it needs consent from Fenland District Council before anyone starts. Those two things move a Wisbech price far further than the few miles between the Market Place and a fen village.
Ask Fenland District Council. It is the planning authority for Wisbech and it holds the conservation area boundaries, and Historic England's list entry will tell you whether a specific building is listed.
Do it early. Finding out after the scaffold is up is expensive, and it is the most common avoidable cost we hear about in this town.
